Spot rates unchanged as flatbed offsets van equipment

Total broker-posted rates in the Truckstop system were essentially flat during the week ended September 22 (week 38) after a notable drop during the prior week. A modest increase in spot rates for flatbed equipment basically offset decreases in rates for van equipment. Dry van rates were the lowest in six weeks while refrigerated rates were the lowest in nine weeks. However, spot rates for both have been moving in sync with seasonal expectations, suggesting no further deterioration in the market.

Loads Available 09.25.23Total load activity declined 5.1% after rebounding nearly 18% during the week following Labor Day week. Volume was about 16% below the same week last year and almost 28% below the five-year average for the week. Unlike the situation with rates, volume for van equipment has been weakening modestly relative to seasonal expectations. Spot volume rose on the West Coast but was down in all other regions. Truck postings ticked up 1.1%, and the Market Demand Index – the ratio of loads to trucks – fell to its level in four weeks.

Rates were almost 10% below the same 2022 week – the least negative y/y comparison since August 2022 – and about 4% below the five-year average. Comparisons versus the five-year average have been stable for a couple of months.
