Spot rates fall in all segments in the latest week

Broker-posted rates in the Truckstop.com system fell in all segments during the week ended August 19 (week 33) as flatbed spot rates once again fell more sharply than did rates in dry van and refrigerated. Flatbed rates have dropped nearly 76 cents – about 21% – since hitting a record level in late May. Total spot volume rose for the first time in five weeks, but load postings in the dry van and refrigerated segments were below their comparable five-year averages for the first time since 2020.

 

Loads Available 08.22.22Total load postings increased 4.0%. Volume was about 44% below the same 2021 week and just barely below the five-year average for the week. Load postings were up in all regions except for the Northeast, although the increase in the South Central region was just 0.4%. Truck postings increased 6.4%, and the Market Demand Index – the ratio of loads to trucks in the Truckstop.com system – eased to its lowest level since early June 2020.


 

 

 

Total Rates 08.22.22The total broker-posted rate in the system fell nearly 7 cents. Rates were nearly 10% below the same 2021 week, but they were 13% above the five-year average for the week. However, FTR estimates that excluding an imputed fuel surcharge, rates would be down more than 21% year over year.



 

 

 

 

Dry Van 08.22.22Dry van spot rates decreased nearly 8 cents. Rates were about 18% lower than the same 2021 week but about 2% higher than the five-year average for the week. However, dry van rates were about 33% lower than the same 2021 week if an imputed fuel surcharge is excluded. Dry van load postings edged up 0.8%. Volume was nearly 47% below the level posted in the same 2021 week and 3.0% below the five-year average for the week.

 

 

 

 

 

Reefer 08.22.22Refrigerated spot rates declined about 4 cents. Rates were nearly 21% below the same 2021 week but about 4% above the five-year average for the week. Rates excluding fuel surcharges were about 32% below the same week last year. Refrigerated load postings ticked up 0.5%. Volume was nearly 52% below the same 2021 week and about 1% below the five-year average for the week.





 

 

Flatbed 08.22.22

Flatbed spot rates fell nearly 9 cents. Rates were more than 4% below the same 2021 week, but they were still more than 19% above the five-year average for the week. Excluding an imputed surcharge, flatbed rates were more than 15% below the same week last year. Flatbed load postings rose 6.5%. Volume was nearly 46% below the same 2021 week and nearly 6% below the five-year average for the week.
